Cajal bodies
نویسنده
چکیده
What are they? Cajal bodies are nuclear suborganelles, typically 0.5 μm in diameter, discovered in 1903 by Santiago Ramón y Cajal. They are dynamic structures involved in the biogenesis of small ribonucleoproteins (RNPs). Cajal bodies contain the highest concentration of small RNPs in the nucleoplasm, as well as a host of other protein factors involved in diverse processes. They are not major sites of transcription per se, but they often associate with specific small nuclear (sn)RNAs and histone genes in interphase cells.

WRAP53 Is Essential for Cajal Body Formation and for Targeting the Survival of Motor Neuron Complex to Cajal Bodies
The WRAP53 gene gives rise to a p53 antisense transcript that regulates p53. This gene also encodes a protein that directs small Cajal body-specific RNAs to Cajal bodies. Cajal bodies are nuclear organelles involved in diverse functions such as processing ribonucleoproteins important for splicing. Here we identify the WRAP53 protein as an essential factor for Cajal body maintenance and for dire...
متن کاملHuman cells lacking coilin and Cajal bodies are proficient in telomerase assembly, trafficking and telomere maintenance
The RNA component of human telomerase (hTR) localizes to Cajal bodies, and it has been proposed that Cajal bodies play a role in the assembly of telomerase holoenzyme and telomerase trafficking. Here, the role of Cajal bodies was examined in Human cells deficient of coilin (i.e. coilin-knockout (KO) cells), in which no Cajal bodies are detected. In coilin-KO cells, a normal level of telomerase ...
متن کاملIn Vivo Analysis of Cajal Body Movement, Separation, and Joining in Live Human Cells
Cajal bodies (also known as coiled bodies) are subnuclear organelles that contain specific nuclear antigens, including splicing small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs) and a subset of nucleolar proteins. Cajal bodies are localized in the nucleoplasm and are often found at the nucleolar periphery. We have constructed a stable HeLa cell line, HeLa(GFP-coilin), that expresses the Cajal body mark...
متن کاملFam118B, a newly identified component of Cajal bodies, is required for Cajal body formation, snRNP biogenesis and cell viability.
Cajal bodies are specialized and dynamic compartments in the nucleus that are involved in the biogenesis of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs). Because of the dynamic and varied roles of Cajal bodies, it is of great interest to identify the components of Cajal bodies to better understand their functions. We performed a genome-wide screen to identify proteins that colocalize with coilin, ...
متن کاملInteractions between coilin and PIASy partially link Cajal bodies to PML bodies.
The eukaryotic nucleus contains a variety of dynamic structures, yet studies into the functional relationship of one type of subnuclear domain to another have been limited. For example, PML bodies and Cajal bodies associate, but the functional consequence of this association and the mediating factors are unknown. Here we report that an associated PML body/Cajal body can co-localize to an snRNA ...
متن کاملCajal bodies and snRNPs - friends with benefits
Spliceosomal snRNPs are complex particles that proceed through a fascinating maturation pathway. Several steps of this pathway are closely linked to nuclear non-membrane structures called Cajal bodies. In this review, I summarize the last 20 y of research in this field. I primarily focus on snRNP biogenesis, specifically on the steps that involve Cajal bodies. I also evaluate the contribution o...
